D’awww

Your unfounded, religiously-driven belief in a 6000 year old earth makes Science Kitty sad.

Happy April Fools Day!

Happy April Fools Day, Internet!
In celebration of the trickiest of days, I present to you random “science facts” floating around the internet, all of which are completely, completely untrue.

Now excuse me while I go plant some rice grains.
I’ll be sure to wash up with kitten saliva afterwards.
Speaking of which, where on earth does a person get “one glass of cat salvia?” Can I get that at the local Safeway, or do I have to special order it online?

Words cannot describe how happy this makes me.
I can’t stop giggling.
They’re so adorably delicious, my tongue may explode from happiness.

Mirror, Mirror

5 Mar

Time for a daily dose of cute!

Cat handlers at the Tampa Big Cat Rescue created this cute video showing how different cats react to seeing their reflection in the mirror, because honestly, isn’t that what you would do if you worked at a big cat rescue? Some of the reactions are pretty priceless. It goes on to prove my hypothesis that white tigers are total divas, and male lions adorably insecure.
I’ve tried doing my own version of this in the lab, by showing petri dishes of bacteria their reflection in the mirror. They just sat there staring back at me, probably in awe of their own awesomeness. (I’m assuming. It’s hard to know what bacteria are thinking about).

If you can’t get enough of mind-blowing cuteness that is cats in mirrors, I highly recommend watching this video. It would reduce even the most cynical person into a fit of bubbly giggles.

Be sure to visit the Tampa Big Cat Rescue website to learn more about their dedicated work, latest rescues, educational opportunities, and the current bill in congress aimed at protecting big cats.

Tales of an Unemployed Lab Geek

2 Mar

Me in the morning is something not quite human. I’m usually some sort of sleepy science monster, wrapped up in a tangle of blankets and giant microbe plushies, hair all askew, mumbling things about how the evil sun won’t stop throwing photons at me. My delightful perkiness doesn’t occur until after my third morning cup of coffee.

Which is why I was thrown off guard when I received a call from a lab I applied to online less than 12 hours earlier. Talk about quick turn around time. It was a pre-interview asking about my recently graduated and ASCP certified status, and whether or not I had been to their city before (A place which recently hit -50 degrees Fahrenheit). They asked about my favorite aspects of the lab (Hematology and Bloodbanking). They informed me that if they were interested, they would send me a webcam to do a first interview, and fly me up for a final interview.
I really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really, really want this job. They offer more opportunities for bloodbanking experience than a lot of other labs. The local college is nationally famous for its well-funded science programs, so I would be able to take more chemistry and statistics classes to prep for grad school, as well as take more biology classes because biology is my one true love. Well, one of them. I have many one true loves.

Though coffee is probably the biggest of all my one true loves.

It is a place that I would not only survive, but thrive, and that’s what I want in life.

Also, unemployment is incredibly, incredibly boring. I am going through severe lab withdrawl. It’s been 3 month since I’ve played with blood or listened to the happy purring of analyzers. Scientists of the world, employ me!!!

Look at me, doing ALL THE SCIENCE!!!
(Though my hair is no longer pink, but a nice lovely shade of normal.)
